Evolving UPS Technology

Data centers serve four primary functions: 1) Power, 2) Cooling, 3) Telecommunications, and 4) Physical Security. An essential component under the power category is the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which ensures the continuous operation of the data center 24/7. You may be familiar with the small UPS batteries used at home or in offices, but those found in data centers are significantly larger. Remarkably, what once required an entire room of batteries can now be accommodated in a single cabinet! In the future, we may even see an entire data center’s power capacity condensed into one cabinet.

Here’s a brief overview of how UPS systems work: In the event of a utility power outage, the critical load is automatically transferred to the batteries, which provide sufficient time for the generators to start up. Once the generators are fully operational (typically within 8-12 seconds), the critical load is automatically switched from the battery to the generators, ensuring seamless power delivery to the data center. It’s an ingenious solution to maintain uninterrupted power supply!
